For Chief Master Sergeant Kris Coats’s retirement, SHB created a shadow-box cabinet and an engraved barrel cap. The work was made to hold the details of his Air Force career and become part of the occasion honoring it.
A place for the record of service
The cabinet brings display space, an illuminated interior and personal engraving into the barrel’s familiar form. The separate cap carries the retirement story into a piece that can be held and shared.
The handoff is part of the story
In the shop, Kris and Ryan stand beside the completed cabinet and cap. The following day’s photographs place those same pieces in the retirement gathering. Seeing both moments connects the hands-on work to the person it was made for.
From the shop to the ceremony
Ryan and Faith attended the May 10, 2024 retirement ceremony at Scott Air Force Base. The photographs connect the finished work to Kris, the gathering and the people who trusted SHB with the commission.
Why this belongs in our story
After the ceremony, SHB shared the impact of witnessing a lifetime of service and sacrifice. Being trusted with that record gives the work its purpose beyond the material and finish.
