Our Story

The work has grown. The people still come first.

SHB began with barrels and the possibilities we saw in them. Over more than a decade, that work has grown into custom spaces, signs, furniture and fabrication.

The material is part of the story. So are the people who trusted us with an idea, the details we had to work through and the relationships that brought the next project through the door.

Ryan, Faith and the work behind the finish

You will see finished rooms and polished pieces here. You will also see the shop: planning, cutting, fitting, sanding and hand painting. Ryan and Faith are part of that work, from the decisions to the details.

The SHBFAM story

SHBFAM grew through years of work, conversation, support and community. Facebook holds much of that history in the order we lived it. This website brings the work together so you can see what SHB can do and where your own project might fit.

The stories become lessons

Working on a service display offers a chance to learn about the life behind the objects. In this photograph, Ryan explains to Ben what some of the medals and coins mean on a retiree’s shadow-box cabinet. Sharing those experiences with the kids is part of the life of the shop.

Recognized at home

SHB was named Godfrey’s Business of the Month for July 2024. In August, Lt. Weller—a longtime customer and cofounder of Walnut Hall Estate—and Godfrey’s Director of Economic Development, Jim Mager, visited the shop to present the plaque. It was a welcome surprise from people connected to both the business and its community.

Recognition from the community

SHB Co. won Best Specialty/Custom Shop in the Telegraph’s 2025 Best of the Best awards. See the 2025 winners.

Carrying it forward

The next chapter is about projects that use what we have learned: distinctive spaces, meaningful pieces and strong working relationships. We want to understand what matters in your project and build the right details around it.
